Scotland weather: New amber snow warning issued as hundreds of schools remain closed for second day
Schools in Shetland, Orkney, Aberdeenshire, and parts of Moray will remain shut on Tuesday. Hundreds of schools in Scotland will remain closed for a second day while a new amber weather warning for snow has been issued.
Heavy snow showers are on the way across parts of Scotland with a weather warning issued by the Met Office. A yellow alert for snow and ice has been put in place from 6am on New Year’s Day until midnight on January 2, covering all parts of the country north of Perth.
The UK looks set to ring in the new year with bitterly cold weather as a bone-chilling -9C blast is set to hit the country. The latest weather maps suggest the start of 2026 is forecast to be a freezing one, with 12 regions up and down the country to shiver under the latest cold snap.

Fresh weather warnings have been issued as hundreds of schools in northern Scotland remain shut on Monday and travel is disrupted because of heavy snow. A yellow warning of snow and ice which covered the country as far south as Perth until the end of Monday has now been extended until midnight on Tuesday.
A number of schools in the UK are expected to close on Wednesday as snow continues to batter much of the UK. Many schools in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland closed on Tuesday as the Met Office imposed an amber weather warning in areas of Scotland.
