5 Predictions for the Stock Market in 2026 -- and Which Stocks Will Soar the Most If They're Right
The ginormous "Magnificent Seven" stocks have been the stars of the stock market in recent years. In 2025, international stocks were the biggest winners. I predict, though, that small- and mid-cap stocks will, at long last, take the torch in 2026.
The CAPE (cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings) ratio measures how expensive the stock market is relative to how much companies are earning. The heuristic works as a reality check: When CAPE is high, stocks are richly priced and future returns have been historically lower. When CAPE is low, stocks tend to be cheaper.
The S & P 500 finished the year up 16%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq climbed 19%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed out 2025 up 13%. A dip in each of the indexes on Wednesday left markets lower in the year’s final trading session.
The stock market faces several headwinds in 2026, but Wall Street still expects another year of double-digit gains.
On Monday, December 29, the Venezuela benchmark index had seen a gain of 22%, followed by another 7% advance on Friday, January 2, when trading resumed after the New Year holiday.
The bond market in the United States is open for a shortened trading day on New Year’s Eve, but the stock market is open regular hours.
The early trends in Gift Nifty suggested a negative start for Indian indices, with GIFT Nifty trading at 26,214.5, down 67 points or 0.25% from the previous Nifty futures close.
